Comments about the GoalXpress Goal Planner from Jim Ball

I wish I could show you what I have seen happen when people sit down with the GoalXpress Goal Planner and take time to systematically think about where they have been and where they are going. It is amazing.

Most people never spend a few hours of quiet time thinking about their goals. Or if they do take time to plan their goals, they do so without much structure and with very little guidance as to what to think about and consider.

When people quietly sit there and go through the GoalXpress Goal Planner they get a bigger, higher level perspective on life. And when they do they start identifying important goals they may have forgotten, or new goals they had not considered previously.

As people complete their Planners and start picking goals to focus upon, you can see them get excited about how they are going to change their lives, improve, and grow. The transformation that takes place in people in just a few hours is sometimes astonishing.

I believe the GoalXpress Goal Planner is a key tool for applying the core life skill of setting goals to create your future. The Planner is not a fancy or electronic gadget, but it really makes you think and it really works for setting goals for planning and achieving a successful life.

Best of luck in using the GoalXpress Goal Planner!

  Background

Background

Jim Ball created the fundamentals of the GoalXpressGoal Planner (the “Planner”) concept many years ago when he was in the consulting and venture capital businesses. He wanted a tool and framework he could use to help entrepreneur's and leaders and managers organize and prioritize their goals. He created the Planner to be this tool.

A few years later, Jim left those businesses and co-founded the Goals Institute so he could focus on understanding the processes and concepts of setting and achieving goals and help others set and achieve their goals. He and others at The Goals Institute created and began offering keynotes and seminars on goal planning and goal achievement.

In 1996, Jim wrote his book, DNA Leadership through Goal-Driven Management, which is a comprehensive guide for setting and achieving goals. In that book Jim created the concept of Goal Stimulators and established the 10 category framework for individual goals. He later incorporated both of these concepts into the GoalXpress Goal Planner. The Goals Institute then began providing the Planner to clients and teaching individuals how to use the Planner.

For example, Jim Ball and Jennifer Kuchta of The Goals Institute provided a series of seminars on using the GoalXpress Goal Planner for many chapters of Financial Women International (FWI). Hundreds of members of FWI learned how to use the Planner to set goals that they later when on to achieve. The Goals Institute was awarded FWI's Partner of the Year award for this series of seminars.

Over the years hundreds of organizations and thousands of individuals have used the Planner to set and achieve their goals.

Web Offering: In the Fall of 2008 we packaged up the GoalXpress Goal Planner with instructions, examples, and tips for using the tool and began offering the Planner directly to individuals through our website. The response we have had has been tremendous.

Please note: While the approach used in the GoalXpress Goal Planner can also be used for goals for business purposes, the Planner offered here is set up with categories for individual goals only.

GoalXpress Goal Planner Highlights and Features

The GoalXpress Goal Planner is a tool for brainstorming, creating, organizing, prioritizing, and setting goals for individuals.

Writing It Down Is Key

The idea behind the GoalXpressGoal Planner is the first step to achieving any goal is knowing what that goal is. The best way to know what your goals are is to take time to think, then write your goals down so you can see what you are thinking in writing and focus on what is important.

Use the Planner to plan your goals for a specific period such as a year, quarter, or month. Update your Planner each year, quarter, or month as appropriate.

The GoalXpress approach is simply to record all the possible goals you may want to pursue in each goal category, and then use the techniques described in the Planner to prioritize and select the important goals you want to pursue now.

The GoalXpress Goal Planner is a manual approach. The Planner is portable, simple, and easy to use. While some people say they prefer to work with a computer, we have found that there is something magical that happens when you slow down with pencil or pen and paper and actually take time to write out your thoughts about your hopes, dreams, and wants.

The actual writing is a key part of the thinking and personal brainstorming process. There is a special magic when you see your hand gliding across the page setting words to paper.

Top 10 Goal Prioritization

One overall objective of using the Planner is to complete the Top 10 Goals page at the front of the Planner by entering major goals you want to pursue now. The Planner provides for having less than 10 Top Goals, but not more. Instructions and tips are provided to help you sort and prioritize your goals. Five Star Criteria are provided as guidance as well.

10 Goal Categories

The Planner is set up for setting and planning goals in up to 12 categories of individual goals. Of these, 10 categories are pre-defined in the Planner and two optional extra categories.

You may change the title and content of the pre-defined categories to meet your needs and preferences. We recommend you use the pre-defined categories if they generally fit your individual circumstances.

The Planner provides two blank sections for more goal categories to meet your particular circumstances. The additional sections are optional. You may use them to create any goal categories you desire.

The 10 pre-defined goal categories are:

    1. Family and Friends
    2. Health and Exercise
    3. Education and Skills Development
    4. Career Development and Growth
    5. Financial
    6. Civic and Social Contribution
    7. House and Furnishings
    8. Personal Assets and Activities
    9. Spiritual Development
    10. Other Goals

Simple Instructions

The Planner comes with Simple Instructions that explain step-by-step how to complete the Planner and prioritize your goals.

Goal Stimulators and Goal Ideas

The Planner contains Goal Stimulators and Illustrative Goal Ideas in each goal category. These are offered to stimulate your thinking and give you specific goals to consider. These suggestions are not a complete list. You may have goals that go beyond the categories and sub-categories provided, however these Goal Stimulators and Goal Ideas will get you started.
